    Winemaker's Notes:

Deep, spicy dark fruits line this earthy and liquorice basement. Upstairs, there is tobacco and boot leather. Roofed with lavender and coffee, this is the house that cornas built.

Layered and with a velvety texture, the palate is luxurious and the nose is liqueur-like smooth. It has depth and balance to warrant 25 years, or 25 minutes.

    Critical Acclaim:

The 2005 Syrah Moritz Vineyard was sourced from "only" 30-year-old vines. It offers floral notes, cassis, bacon, smoked meat, and blueberry compote. Opulent and sweet with gobs of flavor, it should have a 20 year lifespan.

    The Wine Advocate

Rich and powerful, this is plush and velvety and brimming with raspberry, cherry, bittersweet chocolate and creamy spice notes that remain intense through the long, silky, polished finish. Drink now through 2020. 500 cases imported.

Deep violet. Smoky dark berry and kirsch aromas display impressive depth and power, with an overlay of sexy oak spice. Fat, palate-coating dark fruit flavors are supported by gentle acidity, gaining a suave cocoa quality on the finish. Soft tannins add shape to the sweet, jammy finish. This is pretty seductive today.

    International Wine Cellar

With bold aromas of blackberries and blueberries to go with hints of cracked pepper and chocolate, the 2005 Moritz makes a statement. In the mouth, it's full-bodied, rich and slightly warming, and the alcohol continues to show through the long, spice-driven finish.

Amazing! The Wine Advocate description needs to be in all caps to do justice "RICH AND POWERFUL, VELVETY AND BRIMMING WITH RASPBERRY, CHERRY, BITTERSWEET CHOCOLATE AND SPICE NOTES THAT REMAIN INTENSE THROUGH A LONG POLISHED FINISH"!

Truly one of the best Syrah I've ever tasted.... I opened the bottle out of curiosity... I received a bottle as a gift... and immediately became a fan! I am by no means a wine expert however, in the last 3 years have learned so much about wine. The Moritz is by far superior to anything I've experienced, thus far. Great nose and a flavorful finish that made me say 'wow!'

Initially tight, with a hint of smoked meat; after five hours of decanting it revealed layer after layer of flavor - berries, cassis, spice. Wow. Got it on sale but would have been worth full price. Definitely open this hours before you drink it or age it several more years.

Truly a mouthful, this Shiraz dominates from initial impression of smoked meats through an evolution of flavors.

This is a decent, OK, not wow bottle of wine. Clearly it is way overrated. I don't see how RP scored this wine 96. It is well made and balanced, but 96 is huge (very huge) score! I am 91 on this effort. The color is not appealing.
