Grand-Puy Ducasse 2009 has intense color with ruby and purple hues. The aromas on the nose reveal hints of cassis syrup with licorice and toast. These are confirmed on the palate, which is pure and elegant with considerable depth. The finish is stylish, built around tannins which are noble and silky in their texture.
Blend: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot
A pretty nose of lead pencil and currant follows through to a full body, with well-integrated tannins and a silky, long finish. Stylish.
Barrel Sample: 91-94 Points
Possibly the finest wine yet produced at this estate, the 2009 is even fatter, richer, and more unctuously textured than the 2005 (which I loved). It boasts an opaque purple color, thrilling levels of sweet creme de cassis and blackberries along with hints of underbrush as well as forest floor, silky tannins, full body, and a plush, heady, opulent personality. This stunning wine should drink well for two decades.
Barrel Sample: 90-93 Points
Juicy, the fruit showing some awkward super-maturity. Power, but the structure is missing.
Barrel Sample: 89-91 Points
Full, deep red-ruby. Highly perfumed nose combines blackberry, licorice, menthol and medicinal herbs. Sweet, supple and fine-grained for a wine from this property, with strong primary dark berry and chocolate flavors complicated by nuances of herbs, tobacco leaf and leather. Plenty of supporting acidity to give clarity to the mid-palate. Nicely aromatic on the lingering, lightly tarry finish.
