    Winemaker's Notes:

An outstanding wine. Pale yellow color with a complex floral nose of white lilac and white rose. Once open, fruity aromas come to the fore, evolving towards grilled hazelnut and almond. When the wine is more mature, the nose is surprisingly strong and fifteen minutes of aeration produce wonderful notes of white ruffle, citron (cedrat), honey and nutmeg, elegantly meshed together. Very lively on the palate. Its rich texture is in evidence, but also its structure and minerality. It is round, but never heavy. Harmonious fullness in the aftertaste. This wine allies remarkably the complexity and elegance of a Bâtard-Montrachet with the power of a Corton-Charlemagne.

At the southern end of the Beaune appellation, next to Pommard. The Drouhin vineyard is at mid-slope, on a mild incline with an east/south east exposure. It is the largest parcel in the Clos des Mouches (14 hectares - 35 acres), one half planted with Chardonnay, the other half with Pinot Noir.

    Critical Acclaim:

With its famed medieval script label, this is classic wine from Drouhin. This 2008 has all the typical buttery richness while also showing structure, texture and an impressive edge of tension. For aging six years or more.

Musky pineapple and stone on the nose. Rich and voluminous, with sexy yellow fruit and herbal tea flavors conveying a strong impression of sucrosite Very complex and brisk wine; minerally and firm but not at all hard or dry. Finishes suave and long, with lingering oily perfume. This large cuvee is the product of seven different vinifications, according to Philippe Drouhin. 91-93 points.

A very subtle reductive character knocks down the expressiveness of the lemon and pretty white flower aromas so I would strongly suggest decanting this for 20 to 30 minutes first. The detailed, pure and lightly mineral-driven flavors possess really lovely balance and fine length. If there is a nit it is that this doesn't possess the complexity of the best 1ers here though the track record of this wine is such that I wouldn't bet against it developing materially more complexity in the bottle. Drink 2014+.
