#25 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2011
'Ex Umbris' is Latin for 'out of the shadows'. Originally made as a one-off due to a wildfire that resulted in tremendously smoky grapes, this wine has become a NW signature Syrah.
Supple and round, this red is layered with plum, currant, sassafras, cream and spice flavors that keep sailing through the long, vivid finish. This has style and grace to go with its undeniable power. Drink now through 2018.
Bright ruby-red. Shy, fresh nose hints at black fruits, meat, pepper, spicecake and menthol. Silky, tangy and pure, with sound acidity giving shape and grip to the flavors of black raspberry, spicecake and milk chocolate. Relies as much on its edgy acids as on its very suave tannins for structure. A very good showing: I never would have guessed this wine was carrying 14.8% alcohol.
