    Winemaker's Notes:

Mawson's wines come from Wrattonbully, which is situated about 300 km south east of Adelaide and about 30 km north of Coonawarra. The climate is a balance between those of the viticultural regions of Coonawarra and Padthaway.

Crimson red in color and displays intense aromas of lively red fruit pastille married with attractive nutty oak nuances. The palate opens with bright cherry and raspberry fruits melding with cedar and oak on the mid-palate and finishing with refreshing light astringency.

An excellent match with roast leg of lamb. Also suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

    Critical Acclaim:

An offshoot of the Yalumba group, Mawson's sources this fruit from Wrattonbully, just north of better-known Coonawarra. It's a medium-bodied, elegant style of Cabernet, not overpowering, but featuring ample cassis fruit tinged with mint and tobacco. Drink now–2018.

This wine is a wonderful ruby red color in the glass and exhibits a nose of leather, oak, dried herbs and subtle fruit, cherry and blackberry. I was expecting some bright fruit at the outset, but this one surprised me, as the taste of cassis was quite subdued, with a touch of berry at the high notes. Mid-palate, there is a touch of woodiness, followed by well integrated tannins for a nice smooth finish. Based on prior experience with Australian Cabs, I was expecting this wine to be much more fruit forward, but somewhat less bold that a typical California Cab, but this one is really elegant, medium bodied and subtle in unexpected ways.
