    Winemaker's Notes:

The symmetrical 17th century Chateau de Reignac sits atop a gravelly plateau in the peninsular town of St. Loubes, but a stones throw away from the Gironde River. The 200 acre vineyard is planted on rolling hills in clay and gravel soil. Through pruning and green harvesting, yields were limited to just 35 hls/ha (2 ton/acre) The fruit was hand harvested in mid September, the fruit was table sorted twice, before and after destemming to eliminate any less than perfect grapes. The final blend is 75% Merlot, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon.

    Critical Acclaim:

It is remarkable what Yves Vatelot can accomplish at this estate, which is only entitled to an Appellation Bordeaux Superieur designation. A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, the super-impressive 2006 boasts a dense purple color as well as a bouquet of sweet creme de cassis, spring flowers, toasty oak, and background forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, richly fruity, and pure with an alluring texture as well as length, it should drink nicely for 5-10 years.

This is my favorite budget Bordeaux, on which I fall back any time I have to readjust my taste for real wine after being saturated with fruit-bombing - sober up, as it were, even if it may sound ironic in the context (but maybe not given its rather standard ABV). It works like comparing a used ruler to a standard measure, for this Reignac has plenty of sweet fruit with pronounced chocholaty and leathery notes, more than balanced earth, cement, beautifully integrated tannins, and I would say slightly unripe persimmon's mouth-puckering action. The latter could be a bit overwhelming for fruit-bombers (not unlike a good Islay for Speyside folks, requiring taste acquisition), yet to me the first sniff volley from the glass screams a classic Bordeaux-style red the way it is supposed to scream. Having it as an everyday treat would be a real treat if I could not steal it from Wine.com for $13.99. Needless to say, at this price level 20 bottles was a minimalistic purchase in my opinion.

I have the 2005 Reignac in my cellar and I was amazed at the way this vintage held it's flavor after letting it breath for 1 hour. Great body. a excellent choice for steak, grilled meats and veggies. Great with creamy cheeses with garlic.

Ch Reignac provides a classic Bourdeaux taste with hints of complexity and minerals that you don't expect at this price point.
