    Winemaker's Notes:

Deep cherry color. A remarkably complex bouquet with hints of dark fruit and roasted balsamic notes. Warm and inviting on the palate, with soft but persistent tannins in perfect balance with the alcohol.

Blend: 70% Garnacha, 20% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon

    Critical Acclaim:

This red marries ripe fruit to a firm backbone, offering black cherry and blackberry flavors. A bit jammy and sweet, with vanilla and licorice notes, focused by firm tannins and citrusy acidity.

The 2009 Berola is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Some oak enters the picture here, as this cuvee is aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for about 14 months. There are 1,400 cases of this serious red. While priced nearly twice as high as some of its siblings, this is a hefty, rich, impressive wine that will drink well for 7-8 years. Abundant notes of black currants, black cherries, licorice, flowers, vanillin and spice box are found in the aromas and flavors of this medium to full-bodied, silky, well-endowed wine. Unbelievable!

Deep ruby. Pungent, smoky aromas of dark berry preserves, cherry pit and licorice, with a spicy element building with air. Broad and fleshy, offering velvety cherry and blackcurrant flavors and a touch of succulent herbs. The gripping, gently tannic finish clings with very good tenacity and focus.

I do not understand Borsao's intentions with this wine. They are clearly intending to target the american palate with this hyper ripe, uber modern expression of cabernet sauvignon and syrah, burying the grenache into a state of irrelevance. But this is bad because the wine no longer tastes as if it comes from Spain or even Europe. It's a fool's errand to masquerade as a spanish wine with a modern californian taste profile.

Smells absolutely fabulous with a fantastically strong bouquet of dark fruit.

3.5 stars. Probably needs more cellar time as I found the tannins a bit too firm (I decanted 3 hours). I would have guessed the cabernet was much more than just 10% of the blend.
