#97 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2013
This wine has a pale amber yellow color, with golden highlights and a fine, steady flow of light bubbles. It also has an intense nose, clearly marked by the great northern Pinot Noirs from the Reims mountain: this includes citrus (zesty orange), floral notes (sweet flowers, such as hawthorn, with light rosy hints) and ripe juicy fruits (vine peach). On contact with air, more caramel notes appear (baked apple, tatin, roasted almond) as well as some woody hints. The wine is dense and winey in the mouth, with the very mature sweet bite that is natural to Pinots Noirs, expressing its unique, full-bodied and smooth personality. The soft, warm notes (hazelnut and almond) blend with the ripe fruit. The fine, well-balanced bubbles quickly add balance to this winey structure. The mineral, almost iodine freshness is pronounced in the middle of the mouth, adding to the sense of balance with an extremely long, racy, smooth finish.
This well-meshed version is framed by mouthwatering acidity and enlivened by flavors of yellow apple, pear, black currant and lightly toasted almond.
A polished Champagne, classic in its presentation of red fruit and chalk, all held in perfect balance, this is brisk, elegant, tightly structured, a savory 2006 that will age with grace for ten years or longer.
Light, bright yellow. Intensely perfumed bouquet of melon, pear, jasmine and iodine, with mineral and buttered toast accents. Deeply pitched, palate-staining orchard and pit fruit and lemon pith flavors are brightened by zesty acidity and pick up a smoky nuance with air. Powerful but lithe, finishing with excellent thrust and lingering floral and mineral qualities.
