    Winemaker's Notes:

Espelt Garnacha, made with 100% Garnacha, has black fruits on the nose. It is very rounded in the mouth and has a soft, smooth finish. This wine pairs well with meat and pasta, as well as cheddar and manchego cheeses.

    Critical Acclaim:

Made from 100% Grenache planted in decomposed granitic soils, and aged four months in new and used French oak, this deep ruby/purple-colored 2012 Garnacha Old Vines demonstrates what high quality can be found in obscure Spanish appellations. Aromas of kirsch, lavender and strawberries emerge from this medium-bodied, dense, rich 2012. Enjoy this delicious Spanish red wine over the next 3-4 years

Inky ruby. Deeply scented bouquet of dark berries, bitter chocolate and black pepper, with a smoky quality gaining strength with air. Juicy and sweet, showing a chewy texture to its pungent blackberry and blueberry flavors. Becomes livelier with air, picking up a mineral quality and a touch of licorice that lingers on the finish. Shows the darker side of garnacha, and has the heft to handle the richest foods.

I had tried a Garnacha from Costco once. I was so impressed that I ran back - only to find out it was a "one off" and only to be repeated at the whim of their wine buyers. I got this wine hoping for a similar experience. This isn't bad but doesn't live up to my memory of that other Grenache. It has a rough, astringent first impression. I've read that may due to overextraction with the stems. It didn't have the lively fruit that people talk about with Grenache. This isn't a wine cooler type Grenache. It is a good attempt at a robust red using a grape that isn't know for that style. I hope they keep trying. I will not buy this vintage again (though the price made it a no-brainer). However, if other buyers rave about later vintages, I'll be back.

This is a strong wine, but it's not overpowering. While I would like a bit more flavor, I appreciate that this wine is not too sweet. Nor is it too bitter. I agree with another reviewer that it has an astringent first impression, but that mellowed the second day. I also agree that I'd like a lingering and more enjoyable flavor. But, I'd drink this again.

I enjoyed this wine but did not love it. It is well made with aroma's and flavors of fresh cut flowers and strawberry. But I found it to soft and seemed to lack energy and liveliness. But a good wine for the price.
