    Winemaker's Notes:

    #82 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2012

A text book Amontillado of great maturity. Naturally dry and soft, its palate gives a hint of wood and smoky raisins. A powerful and distinctive nutty bouquet. A better Amontillado would be difficult to find.

The Los Arcos Amontillado is ideal as a warming aperitiff, with tapas, especially nuts and meats. It can also be served with a meal or any type of cold meat platter or richly flavored seafoods.

    Critical Acclaim:

The non-vintage Dry Amontillado Los Arcos Solera Reserva reveals a medium amber hue along with a nutty, honeyed, dry personality with great acid.

A more flattering style, with an off-dry edge to the walnut paste, hazelnut, date and clove-studded orange notes, which show nice focus and zip on the finish.

So I'm usually not a sherry fan. I was delightfully impressed and amazed when I tried this wine at a tasting recently. It was almost like a tawny port in its nutty, oxidized flavors, but less alcohol and totally dry. I really enjoyed its complexity and the delicious, lingering finish.

I am surprised by the other reviews of this sherry. I have only tried 4-5 amontillados admittedly, but this one was the most memorable. I love the toasty, light golden brown quality of this sherry, and the hazelnut aroma and taste is wonderful. I find it very interesting that it begins with a hint of sweetness, and finishes on a bitter toasted pine nut note. A Spanish friend suggested drinking it slightly chilled with a singed orange peel as a garnish, and I really enjoyed that as well.

Most Amontillados are flavorful but too sweet for my taste, though I like the aroma and wonderful flavor of a good Amontillado. I have been looking for a long time for a truly flavorful and dry Amontillado - found it! Will definitely buy again.
