    Winemaker's Notes:

It has dense color and structure, bright aromas of violets and blueberries, and ripe fruit flavors reminiscent of cherries, chocolate and cassis. Well-integrated tannins, oak and acidity give it a rich texture and a long, elegant finish.

    Critical Acclaim:

While he now focuses on pinot noir and chardonnay at his Carneros-based winery, Walter Schug spent most of the 1970s and early 1980s making cabernet at Joseph Phelps. This wine shows a sure hand with a Bordelaise cépage. Mostly from Rancho Salina -a vineyard characterized by red volcanic clay like its neighbor Monte Rosso- this is supple and satisfying, juicy as a ripe blackberry yet complex at the end, lifting elegantly on high-toned floral aromas, grounded by a baseline of fine pencil lead tannins and freshened by a hillside-grown acidity that lasts.

A smashing Cab with the power of a Zin, my wife and I drink this wine regularly with our locally harvested elk. This is my wife's single favorite wine.
