    Winemaker's Notes:

Crisp, racy and refined, reflective of the style that every lover of Riesling from our area seeks ...light and elegant with wonderful fruit flavor. This taste profile for the 2007 vintage wines is the inimitable hallmark of top-quality Mosel Riesling, low in alcohol yet bursting with fruit flavor and minerality, providing a vinous transparency of time and place.

    Critical Acclaim:

    #56 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2008

Needs a little air to reveal its floral, apricot and slate aromas and flavors. Beautifully integrated, with a lingering, stony, savory finish. Drink now through 2018. 10,000 cases made.

Ripe and peachy, with floral notes of tangerine citrus and bright, zesty acidity, this is racy and balanced. A terrific value.

The generic St. Urbans-Hof 2007 Riesling – this year incorporating fruit from the upper reaches of the towering Laurentiuslay as well as from Leiwener Klostergarten and Wiltinger Schlangengraben – smells pungently of orange zest, sage, and under-ripe apricot. A honeyed cast on the palate – supported by well-judged residual sugar – offers an attractive foil to the wine’s pungency and lively acidity. Citrus oil, apricot skin tartness, and wet stone mark the considerable finish of this excellent value, best suited for enjoyment over the next couple of years.

I'll admit that I'm a huge fan of riesling so I'm a bit biased towards the grape in general. However, when I first met St. Urbans-Hof as a wine buyer, I loved it immediately: beautiful apricot balanced by that awesome slate quality. But I was unwilling to purchase it from the distributor saying "We have too many high end riesling". I should've looked at the label to see that it was a QbA. When the distributor told me it retailed for under $20, we bought five cases and sold out immediately. Each vintage since has been a pleasure to drink.

The wine is very smooth at 10% alcohol content and is just slightly sweet. The comment about needing a little air to open up is definitely accurate. Personally, I prefer the Chateau St. Michelle Eroica for a Riesling, but this is also a very solid wine.
