    Winemaker's Notes:

Bodegas Atalaya is a new project of the Gil family of Jumilla and Jorge Ordoñez in Denomination of Origin Almansa, situated east of the province of Albacete, between Valencia, Alicante and Murcia. The predominant grape varieties are Garnacha Tintorera, autochthonous to the zone, and Monastrell. The wine was aged for 8 months in 100% French oak barrels.

    Critical Acclaim:

This is the first release of Atalaya. The 2007 Atalaya is a blend of Monastrell, Garnacha Tintorera, and other red grapes. The wine was aged for eight months in French and American oak. This purple-colored wine has an expressive bouquet of violets, spice box, leather, game, blueberry, and black cherry. On the palate it comes off as borderline kinky and definitely sexy with lots of easy-going flavor, superb depth, complexity, and a 45-second finish. Although it can be enjoyed now, it will evolve for another 2-3 years.

Inky purple. Spicy dark berries and cherry on the nose, with strong black cardamom and cumin qualities. Candied blackberry and rose flavors are gently firmed by soft tannins and pick up a peppery note with air. Suave and immediately accessible, with very good finishing sweetness and cling.

Lived up to it's promise. Added it to my queue to buy again, and gave it 5 stars so that I remember it in the future. First glass was good, second better.

I thoroughly enjoy drinking wine, but I am definitely not what you would call a wine connoisseur. I hardly ever dislike a glass of wine, but at same time, I hardly ever will take a sip of wine, gawk in amazement and can't wait to take the next sip! This wine is amazing! It is bold and unique. It stands out in a crowd! I first had this wine at Purple Cafe in Seattle, WA and cannot thank the bartender enough for the recommendation. I immediately returned to home and ordered 3 bottles and will definitely be ordering more soon! This wine has a ton of sediment, so decanting is a must. I also recommend letting the wine sit for at least an hour or so and open up before drinking. Even after opening a bottle and swirling it around in a wine glass vigorously for a few minutes, it was not the taste I remembered from my first sip of Atalaya. Although you'll be itching to drink it, open it and hold off for a bit, and you won't be sorry!

EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS. BOUGHT ONE TRIAL BOTTLE AND WILL DEFINITELY BUY MORE. HAS ENOUGH COMPLEXITY FOR ENJOYMENT WITHOUT BEING TOO COMPLICATED.

I discovered this wine at a local Baltimore restaurant, Pazo and was very surprised at how it compares to much higher priced vintages. Taste is very smooth for a full body experience.

This was an OK wine. To me, I don't feel it is a 91 nor worth the price. It wasn't bad, just not the level I expected from the review and price.
