Wines of Israel: Where the Mediterranean Begins banner image

Everything You Need to Know About Israeli Wine

Looking for an up-and-coming wine region that may also be one of the oldest in the world? Look no further than Israel. You’ll find a region seeped in history but surrounded by cutting-edge technology. From crisp, clean whites to burly, soulful red blends, these wines are made to suit any palate or price point.

Ancient Roots
Wine was a thriving industry in biblical times, but Islamic rule in the area caused production to decline due to religious law surrounding alcohol. Over the past century, Israel has slowly but steadily been increasing production and, most importantly, quality.

A jewel of the Mediterranean
Sitatued along the Mediterranean, Israel enjoys a mostly mediterranean climate tempered by the sea, with sunny days and cool nights. Head inland, and you’ll find higher elevation and dry dessert land. Throughout the country, one finds a myriad of micro-climates with diverse soils and ideal grape-growing conditions.

Grapes & Regions
There are five official wine regions in Israel: Galilee (which includes Golan Heights), Judean Hills, Samson, Negev desert and Shamron. International grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay are popular, but the styles are quite diverse due to regional differences as well as winemaking choices.

Is it all Kosher?
Most, but not all, Israeli wine is kosher, which means that from the time the grapes are picked to the time the wine goes into the bottle, it is handled by those of the Jewish religion who are observant. Also, given that the use of animal products is forbidden, all kosher wine by nature classifies as vegan! Kosher is not a mark of quality, and any wine from more budget friendly to higher-quality refined wines can be Kosher.

It’s time to discover the wines of one of the world’s most historic and fast-developing regions and taste the Mediterranean.
