Red White Sparkling Rosé Spirits GiftsLearn about Freisa — taste profile, popular regions and more …
Grown and favored in the Piedmont region for centuries, Freisa’s uniquely intense berry character and tannins make it capable of a range of red wine styles. Traditionally producers allowed a second fermentation to create slightly frothy wine (called frizzante) akin to a good quality off-dry Lambrusco. Today it is more common to find respectable Asti and Barolo producers creating a complex, still, dry, barrel-aged, cellar-worthy Freisa.
Tasting Notes for Freisa
Freisa is a dry red wine redolent of wild berry, dried plum, cedar or sage, earth and sweet leather. In a frizzante form it expresses more fresh strawberry, sweet herbs and rose petal qualities.
Perfect Food Pairings for Freisa
For perfect food pairing with Freisa, think wild boar ragu, grilled mushrooms, tajarin pasta with white truffles, a bacon and fontina cheese burger and cured meats.
Sommelier Secrets for Freisa
Freisa is a likely parent of Nebbiolo and may be related to Viognier.
