Learn about Verdejo — taste profile, popular regions and more …
Light-bodied, vibrant and captivating, Verdejo grows with great success in Rueda, Spain and virtually nowhere else in Europe. While its origins are not clear, today it is the dominant variety in Rueda DO wines. By law these must be at least 50% Verdejo, with the remainder as Sauvignon Blanc or Viura. In practice many are 100% Verdejo.
Tasting Notes for Verdejo
Verdejo is a dry, white wine with charming aromas of lime zest, citrus blossom, grapefruit, herbs or fennel. Common flavors include green apple, melon, white peach or nectarine.
Perfect Food Pairings for Verdejo
Enjoy this little charmer with a variety of dishes like fish tacos, Thai food, papaya salad or even lemon-spritzed asparagus and steamed artichokes.
Sommelier Secrets for Verdejo
Contrary to what some may think, it is actually not related to the Portugese variety with a very similar name, Verdelho. In fact, DNA profiling suggests it may be a sibling of Godello, a variety native to northwest Spain.
