Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc showcases pleasant aromas lime blossom, guava, grapefruit and toasted fennel. A balanced wine, it is both crisp and complex with flavors of nectarine, grapefruit zest, and guava on the forefront. It finishes with rich texture and a graceful minerality.

Pair this wine with seafood, fresh pasta, or enjoy as an aperitif.

Ripe, well-extracted fruit jumps to the fore here early on and is this moderately full-bodied Sauvignon Blanc’s driving force all the way to the finish, but the wine is far more than simply fruity and gives full play to the grape’s herbal side with a nice dollop of carefully fit oak sweetening the mix. There is a juicy aspect to its frontal appeal, yet there is enough depth and reserve to say that it will be better if cellared, but, whether it is poured in the short term or set aside for a few years, it is a wine that wants pairing with full-flavored dishes such as a spicy, well-seasoned Provençal Bouillabaisse.

There is no holding back with the excellent 2015 Chalk Hill Sauvignon Blanc. The wine serves up a potpourri of delectable aromas and flavors. Its dried herbs and citrus peel notes would pair it beautifully with fennel-accented cold-boiled chicken over jasmine rice. (Tasted: November 16, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

Chalk Hill Winery Winery Video

Perhaps no other winery captures the casual luxury of Sonoma County better than Chalk Hill Estate. Founded nearly four decades ago, this spectacular 1300-acre property features 300 acres of vineyards, wilderness areas, winery, hospitality center, culinary garden, residence, stables, equestrian pavilion, sports fields, fishing and swimming ponds, and guest houses.

The winery's vineyards are thoughtfully woven through the native foliage and contoured to fit the intricate terrain. More than two-thirds of the Chalk Hill Estate remains uncultivated. The higher elevations offer stunning views of the Russian River Valley to the west and the Mayacamas Mountains to the east.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

A Sonoma sub-appellation whose boundaries cover the northeastern corner of the Russian River Valley AVA, the Chalk Hill growing area is named after its unique chalky and white, volcanic ash soils. This terrain has proven successful with white varieties, namely Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc.
