Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Straw yellow color with hints of pale green. Complex and elegant bouquet with fruity notes of fresh citrus and white flesh fruits (Golden Delicious apple, Williams pear and peach), well-combined with tropical notes of pineapple and delicate spicy aromas of sage and field balm. Flavors echo the aromas; well structured, with exceptional mineral qualities and a harmonious and fresh finish.

The 2018 At Last Cuvee lulls you in with an understated yet incredibly pretty blend of tangerine giving way to crushed apple, cardamom and sage. It’s silky and elegant in feel, casting opulent textures across the palate that leave ripe orchard fruits and tropical floral nuances toward the close. A resonance of candied citrus lingers along with savory herbs and hints of kiwi, as the 2018 finishes long yet incredibly fresh. Very pretty. The At Last Cuvee is a blend of Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Riesling Renano.

With hundreds of white grape varieties to choose from, winemakers have the freedom to create a virtually endless assortment of blended white wines. In many European regions, strict laws are in place determining the set of varieties that may be used in white wine blends, but in the New World, experimentation is permitted and encouraged. Blending can be utilized to enhance balance or create complexity, lending different layers of flavors and aromas. For example, a variety that creates a soft and full-bodied white wine blend, like Chardonnay, would do well combined with one that is more fragrant and naturally high in acidity. Sometimes small amounts of a particular variety are added to boost color or aromatics. Blending can take place before or after fermentation, with the latter, more popular option giving more control to the winemaker over the final qualities of the wine.

The southern part of Italy’s northeastern Alpine region, Trentino, produces quality wines from international varieties. But its most exceptional native variety, Teroldego, with plantings concentrated around the sandy, gravelly, limestone soils of its Campo Rotaliano district, makes a deep purple-hued red wine with scents and flavors of wild blackberry, herbs, espresso and cocoa.
