Winemaker Notes

The 2019 Pinot Noir shows that patience and experience matter. Aging this wine for an average of 12 months in a combination of new and used French oak barrels imparts hints of vanilla, waffle cone, and toasty oak. A moderate grip of acidity and low tannins allow this expressive wine to complement a wide range of foods.

COMMENTARY: The 2019 Juggernaut Pinot Noir is lovely and persistent. TASTING NOTES: This wine shows up with formidable aromas and flavors of black fruit, spice hints, and an accent of oak. Enjoy it with grilled lamb chops. (Tasted: July 27, 2021, San Francisco, CA)

Juggernaut Winery Video
Juggernaut grapes are grown in challenging conditions, where true grit and determination yield spectacular results. Determined Hillside Cabernet vines struggle to find purchase on steep, rocky slopes, where well-draining soils inspire roots to burrow deep in search of life-sustaining moisture. Steadfast Pinot Noir vines endure, unwavering, in inhospitable conditions, battered by wind and fog, struggling to utilize every precious hour of warmth and sunlight over a long growing season.

Juggernaut wines harness the power of nature to produce robust, compelling wines as expressive as the powerful alpha-predators adorning our labels.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
