Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Dark red and black notes that is deep and concentrated. Aromas of dark brambleberry, rhubarb, pink and black peppercorn, thyme and grilled meat. Notes of tobacco and leather playfully mix in the background. Very concentrated but impressively resolved and sublime on the palate. Rich, round and full-bodied with gobs of dark red and black fruits. Hints of cocoa powder, leather, black olive and other Mediterranean spices that weave harmoniously together.

Lastly, the 2019 Syrah UBER is the flagship Syrah and comes from a cellar selection from multiple vineyards. It’s blended with 1% Viognier and was raised in 63% new French oak. Beautiful black cherry and blackberry fruits, graphite, smoked game, pepper, and exotic floral notes all emerge from this complex beauty, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a supple, layered texture, terrific freshness and purity, and integrated tannins, all making for a brilliantly balanced, seamless. This bottling, which comes from top barrels of preferred vineyards around the county, begins with earthy aromas of black plum, light crushed pepper, charred berry and a hint of rosemary. A firm tension frames the palate, where bold flavors of baked berry, bay leaf and incense align.

Margerum Wine Company is committed to working with the top vineyards in Santa Barbara County to produce small lots of premium wines. The winery is located in Los Olivos in the heart of California's beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. We are part of a growing group of vintners looking to return wine making to its previous form of production – hand-crafted and personal. Owner Doug Margerum and winemaker Doug "Scotty" Scott, craft world-class wine in a temperature controlled building that houses tanks, barrels, and a cold room that is perfect for our production size.

Our commitment is to create handmade wines with place and personality to them that are made to our own standards. We work within the connotations of nature, stressing individuality, and making a production on a human scale. We strive to make wines that we personally enjoy and our hope is others will enjoy them as well. The approach to this is the antithesis of mass production.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

With a dry and mild climate cooled significantly by moist ocean fog and breezes, Santa Barbara County is a grape-grower’s dream. Part of the larger Central Coast appellation, Santa Barbara is home to Santa Maria Valley and Santa Ynez Valley. The conditions here provide an opportunity for nearly effortless production of high-quality cool-climate Central Coast wines. This is also the site of the 2004 film Sideways, which caused Pinot Noir’s popularity to skyrocket and brought new acclaim to the region.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the stars of Santa Barbara, producing wines marked by racy acidity. Crisp Sauvignon Blanc and savory Syrah are also important. The region is home to many young and enthusiastic winemakers eager to experiment with less common varieties including Chenin Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, Trousseau Gris, Gamay and Cabernet Franc, making it an exciting area to watch.
