    Winemaker Notes

Often mistaken for an Old World wine in blind tastings, the 1998 Chardonnay displays the earthy mineral and mature fruit character typical of Idaho terrior. Nuances of flint, clay, pear, quince, and citrus run through the wine. Blessed with an admirable acid backbone, the wine will continue to take on additional harmony and complexity with further aging.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Some of the very first grapes planted in the Pacific Northwest were planted in Idaho in the 1860s. Today the state is home to over 50 wineries making wines of all styles.
