Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Star bright in color, vibrant pale pink that has flecks of copper reflections. A unique combination of classic Provençal red berries leading to scents of the holidays – pine, cinnamon and gingerbread cookies. The spice notes from the Syrah provides a dry, white pepper characteristic across the entire palate. A touch of Rolle gives great acidity and brightness that lends notes of winter citrus, spice with a warming finish. A perfect wine to take to a BBQ and serve with grilled chicken and vegetable skewers. The spice notes will compliment roasted meats and classic Mediterranean flavors like Greek Souvlaki or charcuterie.

Blend: 30% Syrah, 30% Grenache Noir, 30% Cinsault, 10% Rolle

Complex and decisively clean and crisp, this blend of 30% Syrah, 30% Grenache Noir, 30% Cinsault, and 10% Rolle comes in at 12.5% abv. Orange and jasmine on the nose and palate are accompanied by garden herb-seasoned raspberries. A mid-palate tangerine cream maintains a perky acidity. A zing of spice is a fine finishing touch.

Savory longpepper edges add interest to this wine’s rich cherry fruit, those spicy notes taking center stage to make the wine tannic and savory. It’s built for shellfish: sweet steamed crab with herb butter and quick-pickled summer squash.

  • 90

Fresh strawberries, red cherries, nectarines and some spices on the nose, following through to a medium body with elegant, spiced strawberries. Grenache noir, cinsault, syrah and rolle.

A creamy, supple rosé, with white cherry and perfumed rose blossoms laced with fine, chalky mineral. Shows sweet chamomile tea, dried [i]garrigue[n] and heather that add nice detail. Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Rolle.

Whether it’s playful and fun or savory and serious, most rosé today is not your grandmother’s White Zinfandel, though that category remains strong. Pink wine has recently become quite trendy, and this time around it’s commonly quite dry. Since the pigment in red wines comes from keeping fermenting juice in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, it follows that a pink wine can be made using just a brief period of skin contact—usually just a couple of days. The resulting color depends on grape variety and winemaking style, ranging from pale salmon to deep magenta.

Cotes de Provence is an extensive but valuable appellation that includes vineyards bordering the main Provencal appellations. Its sites vary from subalpine hills, which receive the cooling effects of the mountains to the north, to the coastal St-Tropez, a region mainly influenced by the warm Mediterranean sunshine.

Here the focus is on quality rosé, as it defines four fifths of the region’s wines. Following in the rosé footsteps, a lot of new effort is going into the region’s red production as well. A new generation has turned its focus on high quality Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan. Cotes de Provence white wines, which represent a miniscule part of the region as far as volume, are nonetheless worthy of consideration and can include any combination of Clairette, Semillon, Ugni Blanc and Vermentino.
