Winemaker Notes

Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate Lithology is a series of single vineyard and AVA-designated wines made from select sites within Napa Valley. Lithology Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is produced solely from fruit grown in the historic Beckstoffer to Kalon Vineyard planted in 1865 by W.H. Crabb and represents Oakville's famous bench land.

More dark currants, chocolate, gravelly earth, and tobacco notes emerge from the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Lithology Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. It's deep, full-bodied, balanced, and just a stunning wine in every sense. I suspect it will show even more complexity in 3-4 years and cruise for two decades. This cuvée is a selection (from two blocks in the To Kalon Vineyard) that spent 21 months in just under 90% new French oak.

This is made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon picked from October 2-5. It fermented in oak, concrete and puncheon and was aged in 86% new French oak. Very deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Lithology Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant black cherries, boysenberries and black raspberries scents with underlying cassis, tar, star anise, black pepper and fertile loam scents and a waft of exotic spices. Full-bodied, rich and with impressive concentration, it has a firm frame of very fine, ripe, wonderfully grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and spicy.

This is fantastic, offering blueberries and blackberries, a beautiful mid-palate and refined, fine tannins. Medium to full body. Fresh and clean finish. Hints of tile and earth. Really excellent. Drink or hold.

Ripe and lush, featuring waves of crushed raspberry, blackberry and black currant fruit, infused gently with hints of menthol, warm loam and sweet tobacco. Everything knits wonderfully through the richly detailed finish, showing the underlying energy to stay balanced. Very successful for the vintage. Best from 2022 through 2036.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
