    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

The wine tastes of ripe, juicy wild strawberry, red cherry and blackberry framed by supple tannins. Floral notes of violet and rose petal complement the oak notes of mocha and vanilla on the finish.

Try Alto Cinco with roasted meats & poultry or hearty fish stews. With crispness and silky tannins, it's delightful paired with tomato dishes such as classic Catalan grilled bread with tomatoes, garlic and olive oil or simply enjoy on its own.

    Blend: 94% Garnacha, 6% Tempranillo

    Alto Cinco Winery Image
Alto Cinco is made in cooperation with Bodegas Paniza, in Aragon. With over 50 years of production history in Carinena, Bodegas Paniza is one of the most well respected wineries in Spain, but as of yet, is relatively unknown in the U.S. The state-of-the-art production facilities at Paniza have allowed the Purple Wine Company winemaking team to make the most sophisticated wine in its price point: utilizing an extensive cellar for optimal blending and barrique ageing. Moreover, the Paniza team has been able to lend its extensive knowledge of Garnacha and create a true transnational winemaking environment.

Grenache thrives in any warm, Mediterranean climate where ample sunlight allows its clusters to achieve full phenolic ripeness. While Grenache's birthplace is Spain (there called Garnacha), today it is more recognized as the key player in the red blends of the Southern Rhône, namely Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and its villages. Somm Secret—The Italian island of Sardinia produces bold, rustic, single varietal Grenache (there called Cannonau). California, Washington and Australia have achieved found success with Grenache, both flying solo and in blends.

This northeastern Spanish town is believed to be the origin of the grape with the same name. However, Carinena (in French, known as Carignan) has all but been abandoned in favor of Garnacha, which is better suited for its arid climate. The region of Carinena also produces fine examples of whites based on Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo, Parellada and others.
