The bottled 2017 El Carretil has 14.65% alcohol, which reflects its ripeness, but it's clearly the second wine in the quality hierarchy, second to El Pisón. These two wines have a perfume and seem to transcend the vintage with the finesse and length provided by the limestone-rich soils, which also give it a chalky texture in the palate. This is a great wine, with a fragrant nose of violets, blood oranges and red cherries that give it superb freshness.

Blackberries and ripe fruit with hints of chocolate and walnuts. Medium to full body with very fine, focused tannins and a fresh, vibrant finish. All about finesse and beauty. Drinkable now, but give it time to open. Better after 2022.

Artadi is about purity of extracted fruit with almost Burgundian textures. In fact, critics have often compared these wines to the top wines of Chambolle-Musigny and other top appellations of Burgundy. The key to this level of elegance comes from the cold wines of the Pyrenees which blow from the north. This coupled with moderate temperatures tend to make these wines a study in elegance and power, the iron fist in a velvet glove if you will. They are some of the most extraordinary examples of Tempranillo in the world.
Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.
Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
