Winemaker Notes

Yielding a wine that reflects the expertise of Juan Carlos’ ancestors and the passion of those who want to keep the spirit of the old vineyard alive, the delicate balance of this vineyard’s natural micro-ecosystem is what many believe gives Viña El Pisón its singular character and an enviable sequence of round tannins from year to year. Deep purple in color with a ruby-red rim, this wine has intriguing aromas and flavors of sweet spice, truffle, vanilla, wild berries and blackberry liqueur. Complex and meaty on the palate, with a soft minerality on the mid-palate.

The 2010 Vina El Pison, one of the first single-vineyard wines in Rioja, is sourced from the Tempranillo vines planted by Juan Carlos Lopez de Lacalle’s grandfather in 1945. The 2.4-hectare vineyard is located in Laguardia, very close to the winery, at 480 meters above sea level. The destemmed grapes ferment in open wooden vats and the wine ages for 15 months in French oak barrels. Ever-changing in the glass, it moves from one set of aromas when just opened to the next one in a matter of minutes, switching from cherries to violets, the cinnamon turns into nutmeg, then it is raspberries, and even blood oranges. The medium-bodied palate shows great precision, tension and purity of flavors, with clean acidity and a mineral core that make it vibrant. It’s not in-your-face, it whispers, and you have to pay attention. It has great balance and harmony. The tight tannins would benefit from a little bit more time in bottle, and I’m sure the wine will age for a very long time. This is a great, world-class wine. Drink 2015-2030.

This single-vineyard Rioja is smooth, pure and elegant. Aromas of lemon peel, tobacco, cookie dough, marzipan, spiced plum and cassis set up a lush, deep palate with saturated flavors of wild raspberry, ripe plum, chocolate and fig. Compelling notes of licorice and chocolate are accompanied by a touch of youthful heat and burn on the finish. Cellar Selection.

Artadi Winery Image
The Artadi estate was created in 1985 by the dynamic visionary winemaker, Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle. His objective was to seek and nurture the concept that Tempranillo, when cultivated at high altitude, low-cropped, and from old vines, produces extraordinarily rich and profound wines. This, coupled with specific barrel treatments (with minor American oak influences) produces some of Rioja’s best wines.

Artadi is about purity of extracted fruit with almost Burgundian textures. In fact, critics have often compared these wines to the top wines of Chambolle-Musigny and other top appellations of Burgundy. The key to this level of elegance comes from the cold wines of the Pyrenees which blow from the north. This coupled with moderate temperatures tend to make these wines a study in elegance and power, the iron fist in a velvet glove if you will. They are some of the most extraordinary examples of Tempranillo in the world.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
