Winemaker Notes

A classic example of what this variety can achieve in a warm maritime climate. Made in an unwooded style to retain and enhance varietal fruit freshness. Staggered harvesting of fruit from a combination of estate sites and trellising systems allows expression of a spectrum of aromas and flavors from sweet grassiness to punchy ripe citrus in the finished wine. This complexity also provides exceptional structure and palate weight with considerable ageing potential. Cellaring for five or more years is rewarded with rich complex nut, straw and toast characters in harmony with ripe lemon and sweet grassy nuances while still retaining a pleasantly surprising level of freshness, vibrancy and length.

A dense and fruity white with sliced apple, lemon and hints of stone. Full body, bright and tangy acidity. Flavorful finish.
  • 90
From two estate vineyards in Wilyabrup, one planted in 1976, the second in 1988, this unoaked semillon has a briny lift to its pale, wildflower honey flavors. It’s firm and juicy, with a hint of lanolin in the end, built to age for five or six years, or to decant for grilled fish.

Ashbrook Estate, Australia
Ashbrook Estate Ashbrook Vineyard Winery Image
Now a 3rd generation winery, established by the Devitt family in 1975, Ashbrook produced its first commercial wine in 1979 and completed its 37th vintage in 2015. Currently owned and operated by Carol and Brian Devitt, daughter Catherine Edwards, son Richard and son-in-law Kingsley Edwards, Ashbrook has now been a family business for over 40 years. Only grapes handpicked and grown on the Estate are used and all processing, winemaking, bottling and packaging are closely controlled using the Estate’s own state of the art facilities.

Australia’s pre-eminent wine authority and critic, James Halliday, has awarded Ashbrook Estate a five star rating, an accolade afforded to only Australia’s top wineries. He describes the meaning of his five star rating as "Outstanding winery capable of producing wines of very high quality and, did so this year. Also will usually have at least two wines rated at 95 points or above."

Sémillon has the power to create wines with considerable structure, depth and length that will improve for several decades. It is the perfect partner to the vivdly aromatic Sauvignon Blanc. Sémillon especially shines in the Bordeaux region of Sauternes, which produces some of the world’s greatest sweet wines. Somm Secret—Sémillon was so common in South Africa in the 1820s, covering 93% of the country’s vineyard area, it was simply referred to as Wyndruif, or “wine grape.”

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
