Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

A truly remarkable vintage from the Napa Valley, 2019 provided ideal growing conditions for the cultivation of premium Cabernet Sauvignon. Recognized for the season’s temperate warm weather and cool nights, and absent severe heat spells, the resulting wines are noted for their richness, depth, and complexity.

This is packed with vivid boysenberry, mulberry and black currant fruit that bursts forth with energy, while being held in check by graphite, anise and apple wood notes that lend good underlying tension. Features bramble and warm stone accents on the finish, as the fruit races through. Best from 2023 through 2038.

A soft and velvety red with medium body and round, creamy tannins. Milk-chocolate, blackcurrant and hazelnut character. So attractive now and delicious. Essentially the second wine of Vine Hill Ranch.

  • 94

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon sports a deep purple hue as well as a killer bouquet of darker currants, smoked tobacco, and spicy oak. Ripe, lush, and sexy on the palate, it brings tons of fruit, has supple tannins, and is a delicious, satisfying Cabernet to enjoy over the coming decade.

  • 92

Baker & Hamilton's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon showcases upfront, direct fruit flavors of red and black cherries, plus accents of dried spices and a touch of loam. It's medium to full-bodied, creamy textured and framed by supple tannins, finishing easy and irresistibly delicious.

Baker & Hamilton The Phillips Family Winery Image

Baker & Hamilton is made by the Phillips family. The Phillips family is proud to be part of a long line of independent growers who have farmed in Oakville over the past century. In 1978, parents, Alex and Robert (Bob) Phillips, moved to the Napa Valley to raise their family on the ranch that their grandfather, Bruce Kelham, had purchased some twenty years earlier and christened Vine Hill Ranch.

Over time, Bob and Alex cultivated a vineyard of renown, producing exceptional grapes for a collection of notable Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon vintners. They also dedicated themselves to land preservation and community organizations, including the Farm Bureau and Napa Valley Grapegrowers (NVG), an association pivotal in defining the valley’s appellation structure and protecting its rich agriculture resources.

In 2011, the family was honored with the Napa Valley Grower of the Year award, the first awarded to a family, rather than an individual. Bob and Alex’s love for Vine Hill Ranch is now shared by the third generation.

The family feels profoundly blessed for their parents’ teaching the value of listening, learning, and caring for land and community—and for cultivating in them the heart of a grapegrower.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Home to some of the most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon in America, Napa Valley’s Oakville district stretches across the center of Napa's valley floor and foothills between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. This AVA is home to the legendary To Kalon Vineyard and Martha's Vineyard, as well as many powerhouse wineries including Screaming Eagle, Silver Oak, Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Far Niente and Groth.

The climate is generally warm and agreeable, resulting in year after year of favorable vintages. Summer days see a gentle tug of war between warmer inland air and the cool air coming in from the San Pablo Bay, creating an ideal environment to grow red varieties. Oakville's diverse soils, namely ancient sea bedrock, clay and gravel, are well-drained, and perfect for high-caliber viticulture.

Cabernet here is often bottled varietally but is also popular in Bordeaux Blends. Oakville wines are known for their silky, sensual textures, structured tannins, dark and brooding fruit and lovely aromatics. These age-worthy and prestigious wines are favored by collectors throughout the world.
