Winemaker Notes

Like many wines produced during the 2013 vintage at Barnett Vineyards this wine is an extremely dark purple wine. The wine varietal is wonderfully expressed with acai and mountain berries as well as black pepper and gravel minerality. The mouthfeel is round and lush, thanks in part to the 6% Merlot addition. The berry aromas continue on the palate along with some pomegranate, floral and dark chocolate flavors. The chalky tannins emerge slowly, with firm mountain acidity backing them up. The finish is long with more pomegranate lingering. This is a very fruit forward wine in its youth, but it will continue to develop beautifully over the next 7-9 years (2022-2024).

The 2013 Cabernet Franc, blended with 6% Merlot, spent 22 months in nearly 70% new French oak. The wine shows nice, foresty notes intermixed with spring flowers, blueberry and raspberry. It’s medium-bodied, has more intensity than weight and caresses the palate with sweet tannin and loads if fruit. This is a potentially complex, delicious wine to drink over the next decade or more.

Barnett Vineyards Winery Video
Barnett Vineyards is located at the top of Spring Mountain with spectacular views of the Napa Valley 1700' below. Founded in 1983 by Fiona and Hal Barnett, this rocky mountainside is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and the blending varietals of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In 1984, the first vines were planted in terraced rows with total plantings numbering fourteen acres by 1988. The vines yield an average of less than two tons of fruit per acre resulting in rich, intense wines that have become synonymous with the Barnett name.

Cabernet Franc, a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, is the subtler and more delicate of the Cabernets. Today Cabernet Franc produces outstanding single varietal wines across the wine-producing world. Somm Secret—One of California's best-kept secrets is the Happy Canyon appellation of Santa Barbara. Here Cabernet Franc shines as a single varietal wine or in blends, expressing sumptuous fruit, savory aromas and polished tannins.

Above the town of St. Helena on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains sits the Spring Mountain District.

A dynamic region, its vineyards, cut by numerous springs and streams, vary in elevation, slope and aspect. Soils differ throughout with over 20 distinct types inside of the 8,600 acres that define the appellation. Within that area, only about 1,000 are planted to vineyards. Predominantly farmed by small, independent producers, the region currently has just over 30 wineries.

During the growing season, late afternoon Pacific Ocean breezes reach the Spring Mountain vineyards, which sit at between 400 and 1,200 feet. Daytime temperatures during mid summer and early fall remain slightly cooler than those of the valley floor.

Spring Mountain soils—volcanic matter and sedimentary rock—create intense but balanced reds with lush and delicate tannins. The area excels with Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot and in some cooler spots, Chardonnay.
