    Winemaker Notes

The 2017 Baxter ‘Valenti Vineyard’ Pinot Noir has a clear, pretty colour. From the cool and unique climate of Mendocino Ridge, this wine is lean, mean and texturally complex. Aromas evocative of Burgundian wine caves are apparent on the nose - the gravel floor, musty vaulted ceilings and a sweet smell of wine in the air. Earthy notes of leather and spice add the warmth-factor. Once sipped, savory, almost meaty flavors offer up power and depth. Dried fruits, bramble and woodsy flavors dominate.

In 2002, two generations of our family - both winemakers by trade - came together to create BAXTER, highlighting the very best in North Coast viticulture. Father & son partners, Phil L Baxter and Phil T G Baxter, produce handcrafted single vineyard wines focusing on the Anderson Valley and surrounding Mendocino appellations. Known primarily for their Pinot Noir, the pair combine over fifty years of experience, producing wines naturally, applying instinct and using old-world techniques. They craft wines that possess a notable ‘pureness’ of fruit, reflecting the unique identity of each vineyard site.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Essentially a northern extension of the Sonoma Coast AVA but part of Mendocino County, Mendocino Ridge is one of the rare appellations defined by elevation only. The Mendocino Ridge AVA is reserved only for vineyards at or above 1,200 feet between the Anderson Valley and Pacific Ocean.
