Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Packed with an abundance of fruit character, Bear Flag Cabernet Sauvignon opens with notes of black raspberries, red cherry jam and dried fruit. Silky smooth on your tongue, things get interesting when subtle layers of clove, cedar, luscious butterscotch and cocoa kick in.

This Cab delivers plenty of power and flavor, blended with 13% Merlot and 4% Petite Sirah. Lively and approachable, the tobacco, tomato leaf, cedar and dried herb complement the richness of berry and plum cradled in sweet oak.

Bear Flag, California
Bear Flag Winery Image
Having now worked more than 20 vintages in the vineyards of California, Aaron Piotter is excited by his next adventure as winemaker for Bear Flag. A deeply personal project, Bear Flag allows Aaron to represent Sonoma, his hometown, with perhaps the its best-known variety. He understands the dynamic growing region and what it takes to craft a truly authentic California Zinfandel.

“California’s remarkable, persistent heat and cooler nights push Zinfandel into the ripe, jammy berry spectrum. This region is known for making amazing Zinfandel, and some of the top, if not the best, wineries who specialize in this variety are in Sonoma County,” he says.

Aaron and his wife love going on adventures with their two children, who were both born in Sonoma, and are excited for their local roots to continue spreading. With his family still residing in Sonoma, they enjoy spending time with his parents, eating meals in their backyard under giant cork oak and fig trees and taking hikes in the Eastern hills of Sonoma - the same hillsides that were deemed ideal for Zinfandel 160 years ago.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
