Winemaker Notes

Not only is this a perfect wine for spring and summer, it's a perfect example of the attention to detail that goes into the wines we craft. Unlike most wineries, which produce rosés as a byproduct of bleeding-off juice to enhance concentration in a given lot of wine, we grow blocks of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre specifically for our rosé. This is important for several reasons: the fruit on these blocks is farmed differently, and it is harvested sooner at lower Brix and with higher acidity. In turn, the three varietals we have chosen to blend together create a more complete expression of rosé, with the Grenache core delivering bright fruit, acid and structure, the Syrah contributing color and depth, and the Mourvèdre adding textural softness, and sophisticated notes of earth and spice.

This wine's warmth and spicy red intensity make it a rose for food. The alcohol is perceptible, but it's balanced by plenty of flavor and earthy structure. It provoked a range of food suggestions from the panelists, including seafood paella, barbecued shrimp wrapped in bacon and slow smoked barbequed ribs. (1,000 cases).

Beckmen Vineyards Winery Image
The goal of Beckmen Vineyards is to become the most prominent family owned vineyard estate in Santa Barbara County. Rhone style wines cultivated from Purisima Mountain Vineyard will be their contribution to the next chapter of winegrowing in the Santa Ynez Valley. To appreciate this goal is to be able to understand the history of the Santa Barbara Wine country and the pioneering spirit of Tom Beckmen and his family.

In 1996 Beckmen Estate Vineyards purchased Purisima Mountain Vineyard a 365-acre Estate overlooking the Santa Ynez Valley, where there are ideal soils and climate for Rhone varieties. They began planting in 1997 and have completed a total of 130 acres at this time. The high density plantings are designed to optimize different hillside exposures and elevations.

Whether it’s playful and fun or savory and serious, most rosé today is not your grandmother’s White Zinfandel, though that category remains strong. Pink wine has recently become quite trendy, and this time around it’s commonly quite dry. Since the pigment in red wines comes from keeping fermenting juice in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, it follows that a pink wine can be made using just a brief period of skin contact—usually just a couple of days. The resulting color depends on grape variety and winemaking style, ranging from pale salmon to deep magenta.

The largest and perhaps most varied of California’s wine-growing regions, the Central Coast produces a good majority of the state's wine. This vast California wine district stretches from San Francisco all the way to Santa Barbara along the coast, and reaches inland nearly all the way to the Central Valley.

Encompassing an extremely diverse array of climates, soil types and wine styles, it contains many smaller sub-AVAs, including San Francisco Bay, Monterey, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Paso Robles, Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley.

While the Central Coast California wine region could probably support almost any major grape varietiy, it is famous for a few Central Coast reds and whites. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are among the major ones. The Central Coast is home to many of the state's small, artisanal wineries crafting unique, high-quality wines, as well as larger producers also making exceptional wines.
