Winemaker Notes

From vineyards Benovia harvested before the fires, they were able to craft a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir with intense fruit and spice aromas and layered texture. Aromas are dominated by red fruits of plum and vine-ripened raspberry, while black fruits dominate on the palette. The vibrant aromas expand and give way to bright red fruits and baking spices. On the palate the wine has integrated acidity and fine tannins that should allow for mid-term cellaring. As always, the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

This alluring wine hits the sweet spot, combining gorgeous ripe cherries and berries with a dash of tangy acidity and moderate tannins to balance out the effusive fruit. Oak spices from cinnamon to clove and ginger contribute nicely to the wine’s complexity and appeal.

Benovia Winery Winery Image
Ben Dewane and Novian Anderson never met, yet they raised their children with similar old-fashioned values. Hard work brings its own rewards, they would say. Be the best at what you do. Surround yourself with good people, and let them get to work. And never, ever produce anything that wouldn't make you proud.

With such similar family backgrounds, it's no wonder Joe Anderson and Mary Dewane would eventually find each other and marry. Together, they began a journey that led them to establish a winery that would make them, and their fathers, proud -- proud enough that the Benovia name pays homage to Ben and Novian.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
