Winemaker Notes

Original Wine Note: The 2001 vintage got off to a quick start with warm weather in February and March, which caused bud break and fruit-set to occur 7-10 days earlier than normal. In early April, temperatures cooled down significantly and slowed the development of the clusters. Winter and spring rains were below average but were adequate to restore essential moisture in the soils. Moderate weather conditions through the rest of the growing season helped produce high quality grapes. Ed put the wines through 100-percent malolactic fermentation for added complexity and softness, and age them for nearly two years before Ed selects the blend that he feels layers the personalities of the vineyards into a harmonious whole. 2007 Tasting Note:

Intense blackberry, cassis and cocoa.
Another big vintage, fairly tannic.
A lot of brown spice and blackberry.

When all of these cuvees are blended together, the result is the finest Cabernet Sauvignon yet made by Ed Sbragia, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve (11,000 cases of truly divine Cabernet nectar). For statisticians, 44% came from the Steinhauer Vineyard, 1% from Bancroft Ranch, 17% from Rancho del Oso, 3% from Chabot, 13% from St. Helena Home Ranch, 0% from Quarry Vineyard, and the balance from Marston Vineyard. As I reported last year, the 2001 is an extraordinary effort. Large-scaled yet elegant, it boasts classic notes of creme de cassis, chocolate, and smoky oak. With extraordinary voluptuousness, great concentration, tremendous intensity, and a finish that lasts nearly 60 seconds, this saturated purple-colored, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the greatest wines ever made at Beringer. It is a tribute to the brilliant Ed Sbragia. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2023

A massive youngster, with a fine structure and firm, chewy tannins. Dense and concentrated, only offering glimpses of what lies ahead. Shows dried currant, herb, sage and wild berry flavors. Needs time. Best from 2008 through 2014.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
