Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Light, yellow gold color. Aromas of ripe pear and lemon. Juicy orchard and citrus fruit flavors in the mouth with hints of minerality. Long lasting citrus and floral notes on the finish with perfectly balanced and persistent acidity.

A refreshing expression of godello with sliced green apples, fresh herbs and minerals. Crisp and incisive, with mouthwatering acidity cutting through the elegant apple and lime flavors on the palate. A little light, bit showing intensity and energy.

Bodegas del Abad, Spain
Bodegas del Abad (translated 'The Abbot’s Cellar') is a state-of-the-art bodega with the latest technological innovations for wine production. All of the vineyards are estate owned. Cold maceration and fermentation are done in truncated cone shape tanks that have been custom made for the bodega. The bodega is climate controlled and the entire production process is done in an extremely clean environment. All of their wines contain only naturally occurring sulfites. No additional preservatives are added to their wines.

Godello is native to northwest Spain and has experienced a major revival in the last 20 years. Godello wines are typically sleek and lightly creamy in texture. Barrel fermentation and lees stirring are typical in Valdeorras, Spain where the grape comes from. These winemaking techniques make the most of Godello's inherent structure and help bring out its lovely floral character. Somm Secret—DNA profiling says that Spain’s Godello is actually identical to the Portugese grape variety Gouveio, which grows throughout the Douro and Dão (where it used to mistakenly be called Verdelho).

One of the few northwestern Spanish regions with a focus on a red variety, Bierzo, part of Castilla y León, is home to the flowery and fruity Mencia grape. Mencia produces balanced and bright red wines full of strawberry, raspberry, pomegranate, baking spice, pepper and black licorice. The well-drained soils of Bierzo are slate and granite.
