Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Bright, deep, cherry-red. Intense aromas of ripe black berries to the nose accompanied with balsamic touches which are reminiscent of coconut and licorice. It is fresh and pleasant in the mouth with a noticeable texture where the smoky and fruit assembled nuances reappear. Long and enfolding finish.

Professional Ratings

The 2009 Crianza is a pure Tempranillo from vineyards in Haro, Briones, San Vicente and La Bastida, all located in Rioja Alta. It has lively Morello cherry and soy notes on the nose that is well-defined and develops rose petal scents with aeration. The palate is fresh and fleshy with crisp acidity and joyful, red cherry and strawberry fruit on the harmonious finish. This is a very fine Crianza for the price.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
