Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Unico comes from the oldest vines of the property. In addition to Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon provides more of composition merlot. Although it is old, red maintains its resiliency provided by good acidity balanced with a resounding alcohol. It has an intense ripe cherry color, with the sharp edge of a correct wine. Prevalent in the aromas are the notes of toasty wood, a result of its evolution during his years in cask. Amplitude has aged but clean flavors of wood, dry and pleasantly bitter tannins from oak, with his touch of light sweetness of the wine's spirit.

The 2007 Único from magnum showed much better than expected, as 2007 was very challenging. The wine showed concentrated and quite tannic, from a powerful year with 14.5% alcohol after a rainy season and an unusually cold summer. It was produced with Tinto Fino and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 3,107 magnums produced. Artwork by Francisco Javier Rodríguez Quesada.

This harmonious red is balanced and deep, offering ripe plum and currant flavors, with black pepper, tobacco, licorice and mineral accents. Delivers plenty of structure, with well-integrated tannins and lively acidity. The wine remains graceful through the long, spicy finish. Drink now through 2027.

Aromas of raisin and cassis lean in the direction of overripe. This is less elegant and more blocky than most bottlings of Unico, but with ripe, loamy blackberry and plum flavors, it tastes great. A slightly hollow but round finish with mild residual tannins suggests that this be drunk now through 2024.

Few wines have a history as distinguished as that of Vega Sicilia. Founded in the 1860’s, its reputation on its flagship vintage has for more than 100 years produced two great wines, each appropriately named "Único."

It was at Vega Sicilia in Ribera del Duero, two hours from Madrid, that Tempranillo proved its potential for greatness. When the estate's original founder, Don Eloy Lecanda Chaves returned from France with cuttings of Bordeaux varietals, he planted them alongside the indigenous variety, then known simply as Tinto del Pais, or “Country Red”, but today known as Tinto Fino or Tempranillo. Surprisingly, it was the Tempranillo that produced the superior wine.

Today, the market for Vega Sicilia is one of scarcity and increasing demand. Vega Sicilia’s growing fame and desirability is testament not only to the estate’s enduring legacy but to the world’s craving for wines of history and noble bearing. Vega Sicilia's vintage Único, Reserva Especial and Valbuena are such wines.
