Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Suave aromas of fruit and flowers harmoniously blended with just the right touch of oak. This is a rich wine with expressive aromas and extraordinary smoothness.

Pairs well with fish and poultry with fairly spicy sauces.

Lovely aromas of apples, dried bananas, flowers and flour. Full-bodied with dense, creamy texture and layers of ripe fruit. Just a hint of cream to the flavor. A little tight at the end. Drinkable now, but still a little timid. Try after 2021.

COMMENTARY: The 2018 Bouchard Père & Fils Beaune Clos Saint-Landry Premier Cru is tightknit and well-structured. TASTING NOTES: This wine exhibits excellent persistence. Its classic aromas and flavors of apple, mineral, and earth would pair well with grilled oysters. (Tasted: March 3, 2020, San Francisco, CA)

The 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Clos Saint-Landry Blanc offers up aromas of mirabelle plums, apricot and white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural palate that's ripe and enveloping but which remains nicely defined. Again, this will drink well young.

In barrel still. Pale lemon colour. This is a soil which works well in white, and the wine delivers a good density of pure white fruit, with attractive oak, and a fine long easy-going finish.

Floral, honey, apple and peach flavors grace this rich white, with supporting accents of vanilla, clove and butterscotch. It's full of charm and lingers on the spicy finish. Drink now through 2024. 73 cases imported.

Bouchard Pere & Fils Winery Video

Established in 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest and most diverse Estate in Burgundy with approximately 130 ha (320 acres) of vineyards, the majority of which are Premiers and Grands Crus. Highly sought after, their wines benefit from optimal ageing conditions in the underground cellars of the Château de Beaune, the former 15th century royal fortress that the Domaine has occupied since 1820. Bouchard Père & Fils doesn't make wines; they bring them into existence. Cultivation and vinification, on a plot-by-plot basis, are a form of craftmanship that they pride themselves on which has led to the utmost respect for their terroirs. Bouchard Père & Fils obtained the highest level of sustainable agricultural certification (HVE3) in 2015, being the first in the Côte d'Or to do so.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

While the city represents the epicenter of wine production in Burgundy, the term, “Beaune” also refers to the specific sub-appellation of the greater Côte de Beaune, whose vineyards climb up the pastoral slopes that border the city to its west. Originally founded as a Roman camp by Julius Caesar, the city of Beaune eventually became the seat of the dukes of Burgundy until the 13th century. Today it is home to top négociants such as Louis Jadot, Joseph Drouhin, Louis Latour, and Bouchard Père et Fils.

The appellation, dominated by Pinot Noir plantings, represents a lovely and charming place to begin to understand red Burgundy. Its sandy soils create light and supple, floral driven Pinot Noir. These wines are designed to be enjoyed within five to 10 years. The vineyards of Beaune span a broad swath of Premier Crus from Savigny-lès-Beaune to its border with Pommard.

Chardonnay acreage here has been increasing here in the more recent years.
