Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Calcu Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon has an elegant and expressive structure with a bright and velvety red color. On the nose the aromas of black cherries and red plums, fresh and crispy, emerge. On the palate it stands out for an enveloping palate with body, and for its long, fresh and fruity finish.

Professional Ratings

  • 89
A fresh and elegant version, revealing hints of floral cassis to the rich core of cherry and plum, with fine tannins gathering notes of wet stone.
  • 89

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva Calcu also contains a 6% dash of Petit Verdot from Marchigüe, Colchagua, and was aged for 12 months in French barrels. Purple with a garnet sheen. The ripe nose delivers aromas of red currant, blackberry and jam over a bed of flavors from the aging process. Medium-bodied in the mouth, with active tannins. The wood sets the tone during the smoky finish.

Calcu Winery Video

Rodrigo Romero is the winemaker of an exciting line of small production wines made for everyday drinking but far more interesting and distinctive than most in its category. Calcu, which means "magician" in the local Mapuche language, was created to emphasize the diversity of Chile’s Colchagua Valley with most of the estate fruit coming from the family’s cool Marchigüe vineyard.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Colchagua Valley Wine

Rapel Valley, Chile

View all products

Well-regarded for intense and exceptionally high quality red wines, the Colchagua Valley is situated in the southern part of Chile’s Rapel Valley, with many of the best vineyards lying in the foothills of the Coastal Range.

Heavy French investment and cutting-edge technology in both the vineyard and the winery has been a boon to the local viticultural industry, which already laid claim to ancient vines and a textbook Mediterranean climate.

The warm, dry growing season in the Colchagua Valley favors robust reds made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec and Syrah—in fact, some of Chile’s very best are made here. A small amount of good white wine is produced from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
