Winemaker Notes

Profoundly deep and concentrated. The extremely deep color, aromatic nose and ripe, black-fruit flavors of Campo Eliseo come from 100 percent Tinta de Toro grapes. The old vines are rooted in sandy, iron-laden soils with stones that capture heat during the day and radiate it at night, fostering optimally mature tannins. Planted at 900 vines per hectare, the vines are goblet pruned to protect them from the wind. The region's low rainfall results in small, concentrated yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare, and wide diurnal swings give the grapes exceptional balance. New French oakbarrels contribute integrated vanilla and clove spice nuances to the beautifully structured,full-bodied flavors.

Rich yet balanced, this modern red offers plum, blackberry, coffee, mineral and spicy flavors supported by firm, well-integrated tannins. A smooth yet powerful wine that blooms on the finish.

Campo Eliseo, Spain
Campo Eliseo Winery Image
A love for the land and a winemaker's curiosity led Francois Lurton and Dany and Michel Rolland to discover unique native varieties and terroirs. Their adventurous spirit brought them to Toro and Rueda over 30 years ago, and since then, the combination of French and Castilian winemaking traditions has led them to become one of the leading names in great Spanish wines.

Notoriously food-friendly, long-lasting and Spain’s most widely planted grape, Tempranillo is the star variety of red wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The Rioja terms Joven, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva indicate both barrel and bottle time before release. Traditionally blended in Rioja with Garnacha, plus a bit of Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano, the Tempranillo in Ribera del Duero typically stands alone. Somm Secret—Tempranillo claims many different names depending on location. In Penedès, it is called Ull de Llebre and in Valdepeñas, goes by Cencibel. Known as Tinta Roriz in Portugal, Tempranillo plays an important role in Port wine.

Spain's remote, high elevation Spanish wine zone between the regions of Bierzo and Ribera del Duero produces intense, full-bodied reds made from Tempranillo, locally called Tinta de Toro. This local variant has adapted to the region’s climatic extremes and recognizing its potential, top producers from Ribera del Duero and Rioja have invested heavily in its vineyards.
