    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

Very pale yellow in color, with a touch of green at the edges. Thenose is a blend of slightly grassy and herbal aromas together withthose reminiscent of exotic fruits, like passion fruit or pineapple, aswell as hints of grapefruit and green apples. The palate is complex and very well-balanced, with a good weight, but nevertheless being very drinkable and approachable.

    Campos de Suenos, Spain
This winery has been very recently built, just before the 2010 harvest, with the one single objective of making excellent Verdejo. It has a total capacity of three million litres, using all the latest technology to ensure complete control during the whole process, whilst using the minimum number of staff possible in order to keep costs within reason. This wine has been baptized with the name Campos de Sueños (Sueños means dreams in English). This was inspired by the landscape of the region during harvest time. This flat region, which lacks outstanding natural landmarks, is criss-crossed by wires. But come harvest time, whilst the grapes are picked down below, great flocks of birds gather on the wires before heading south to their wintering grounds. As the summer comes to an end, it is also a time of dreams of the future, of the winter sun and the new fresh white wines we will have in the spring.

Captivating and full of character, Verdejo grows with great success in Rueda, Spain and virtually nowhere else in Europe. It has become so trendy in Spain since the turn of the century that plantings have also increased tremendously. Somm Secret—Contrary to what some may think, it is actually not related to the Portugese variety with a very similar name, Verdelho. In fact, DNA profiling suggests it may be a sibling of Godello, another native of NW Spain.

Rueda is located along the banks of the Duero River in Spain’s Castilla y León region, just a 2-hour drive north of Madrid. While winemaking in this area goes back to the 12th century, it was in the 1980s that the region was granted Denominación de Origen (D.O.) status. Today, more than 70 wineries call Rueda home. This national favorite is the top-selling white wine in Spain.

Notable facts Rueda’s main grape variety, Verdejo, gets it distinct complexity from stressful growing conditions and mineral-rich soil. Think of Verdejo as a fuller-bodied and more aromatic Sauvignon Blanc. A lush and smooth character with perfectly balanced acidity means Rueda wines pair well with seafood, fresh salads and spicy food, but are also great on their own.
