Winemaker Notes

Quality sparkling wine with very well integrated bubbles. Combines fresh aromas of fennel or aniseed with other more mature aromas such as melon, pear, and pastry. Vivacious in the mouth, full-bodies and very dry. Elegant, structured and with a long ending. Fineness and extraordinary elegance, fruity balance and long persistence.

The new sparkling white 2014 Mosset Brut Nature is from a zone that names the wine, a terraced part of the Bitlles River in Penedès. This is the first vintage produced. It has a very expressive nose with a notable absence of fruit and is stony, austere and mineral with some lemon peel citrus twist and some fennel. It has very tasty flavors and a dry palate with a chalky texture and a saline hint on the finish. Brilliant. This is not about the grapes, but it's produced with 65% Xarel·lo, 25% Macabeu and 10% Parellada and matured with the lees in bottle for at least 48 months.

Light straw to the eye, this gently effervescent wine has a nose of Bartlett pear, apricot and rising pizza dough. It offers a nice combination of fresh and candied citrus fruit and dried Mediterranean herb flavors backed by a vein of lively acidity.

Unique to the Cava producing region of Penedes, Castellroig represents one of the few 100% family owned, estate run establishments. Father and son, Marcelino Sabaté and Marcel Sabaté I Coca, apply all of their efforts and passion to maintain family tradition while incorporating technological advancements in the cellar. Four generations of organic grape growing with complete respect for the environment and varietals native to the land.

With complete dedication to producing wines reflective of the soil, the concept of ‘Vins de Terrer’ was born. A location 40km south of Barcelona affords a privileged location with a valley protected by mountains and a moderate climate due to the close proximity to the Mediterranean coast. Marine sediment embedded in the soil promotes vines with a longer, slower ripening cycle and added complexity in the grapes. The Sabaté I Coca estate is distributed across 18 terroirs, 62 parcels, and 40 hectares throughout the Valle del Bitlles. Grapes are carefully selected for each bottling and hand harvested from each of these terroirs.

Castellroig achieves the ultimate expressions of these different parcels with extra focus on the native Xarel-lo grape. Capable of achieving the greatest aromatics, body, and acidity, Xarel-lo represents the most favorable varietal in the Cava blend.

Representing the topmost expression of a Champagne house, a vintage Champagne is one made from the produce of a single, superior harvest year. Vintage Champagnes account for a mere 5% of total Champagne production and are produced about three times in a decade. Champagne is typically made as a blend of multiple years in order to preserve the house style; these will have non-vintage, or simply, NV on the label. The term, "vintage," as it applies to all wine, simply means a single harvest year.

A superior source of white grapes for the production of Spain’s prized sparkling wine, Cava, the Penedes region is part of Catalunya and sits just south of Barcelona. Medio Penedès is the most productive source of the Cava grapes, Macabeo, Xarel-lo, and Parellada. Penedes also grows Garnacha and Tempranillo (here called Ull de Llebre in Catalan), for high quality reds and rosès.
