Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

A perfect wine for the warm summer months, this clean, light and refreshing Picpoul Blanc. A pretty nose of orange blossom and jasmine leads to a seamless, clean texture with light citrus flavors of lemon and honeydew melon.

COMMENTARY: When I was a young wine professional, I was excited to discover Picpoul from the southern part of France. Those wines were clean, fresh, and spoke of minerality. The 2018 Cellars 33 Picpoul Blanc from Lodi has recreated the best attributes of those wines. TASTING NOTES: This wine is fresh, bright, and clean. Its brisk aromas and flavors of ripe fruit and chalk should pair nicely with linguine and clams. (Tasted: April 23, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Cellars 33, California
Cellars 33 Katie and John in the Vineyard Winery Image
The foundation of what became Cellars 33® began about 15 years ago when a man finally met the woman he knew he would marry. At the time, John was an active beer brewer and enthusiast in Baltimore, Maryland. The problem was, Katie wasn't a big fan of, nor terribly impressed with, beer or home brewing. What to do? Wine!! So, with the purchase of an $8 bottle of California Merlot, Cellars 33® was "born". With that beginning, including a small wine rack strategically placed on the top of their refrigerator (probably the warmest place in John's apartment), Katie and John undertook a journey to learn everything they could about wine. With frequent vacations to California and a fateful wine cruise to Italy in 2007, the die was cast. In 2007, it was time to get hands on, so John began with a brief harvest internship at Freeman Winery in Sebastopol, California. Those two weeks were filled with 16 hour days of intensely physical, hard work. Reluctant to return home to his law practice, he immediately began planning for a return. The following two years saw full internship positions at Freeman in addition to other trips for racking, blending and bottling what would become the first wines for Cellars 33®. Finally, in January 2010, with a 28 foot Penske truck packed full with all of their belongings, John and Katie, with their intrepid dog Max, drove across the country and settled here in San Francisco. Cellars 33® became licensed and started selling wine to a loyal Mailing List the following year and has experienced annual growth of 100%. Now with slightly over 1,000 cases produced annually, Cellars 33® focuses on premium vineyard sites for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and whatever else Katie lets John make.

Picpoul remains one of the few wines in France named for the grape more than the place; Picpoul de Pinet refers to the white wines made exclusively from the grape called Piquepoul Blanc in the Languedoc communes of Pinet, Mèze, Florensac, Castelnau-de-Guers, Montagnac and Pomérols. Confusingly, the spelling, Piquepoul, can be used for the variety in all other appellations except for those named above. The grape is ubiquitous throughout the Languedoc. Somm Secret—Pomérols is a commune in the Languedoc-Rousillon region in the south of France and has nothing to do with the Bordeaux village of virtually the same name, Pomerol.

Lodi Wine

Positioned between the San Francisco Bay and the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the Lodi appellation, while relatively far inland, is able to maintain a classic Mediterranean climate featuring warm, sunny days and cool evenings. This is because the appellation is uniquely situated at the end of the Sacramento River Delta, which brings chilly, afternoon “delta breezes” to the area during the growing season.

Lodi is a premier source of 100+ year old ancient Zinfandel vineyards—some dating back as far as 1888! With low yields of small berries, these heritage vines produce complex and bold wines, concentrated in rich and voluptuous, dark fruit.

But Lodi doesn’t just produce Zinfandel; in fact, the appellation produces high quality wines from over 100 different grape varieties. Among them are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc as well as some of California's more rare and unique grapes. Lodi is recognized as an ideal spot for growing Spanish varieties like Albarino and Tempranillo, Portugese varieties—namely Touriga Nacional—as well as many German, Italian and French varieties.

Soil types vary widely among Lodi’s seven sub-appellations (Cosumnes River, Alta Mesa, Deer Creek Hills, Borden Ranch, Jahant, Clements Hills and Mokelumne River). The eastern hills are clay-based and rocky and in the west, along the Mokelumne and Cosumnes Rivers, sandy and mineral-heavy soils support the majority of Lodi’s century-old own-rooted Zinfandel vineyards. Unique to Lodi are pink Rocklin-Jahant loam soils, mainly found in the Jahant sub-appellation.
