James Suckling

The nose is so deep and almost endless with dried strawberries, blueberries, and incense. Citrus too. Some prunes. Full body, with chewy yet polished tannin quality and tension. Beautiful focus and balance with a richness and delicacy at the same time. Something almost Burgundian. It's the purity of fruit. 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot.

The Wine Advocate

The 2010 Ausone struck me as another brilliant, potentially perfect wine, which should come as no shock to people who have been following Vauthier’s work over the last decade or more. Backward and intense, this wine offers up notes of crushed chalk/rock mineralilty interwoven with blueberry, black raspberry and cassis as well as some graphite and vanillin. It is incredibly rich but at the same time precise, fresh and vivacious. This is a super wine, but it will require enormous patience from its potential suitors. Forget it for a decade and drink it over the following 50+ years.

While there is a surprising amount of wood here, the fruit gives a great ripe swathe of blackberry and red plum flavors. The wood spice goes with an impressive weight of fruit, shining through a lovely, perfumed aftertaste.

Only three families have been the owners of the current prestigious estate of Ausone in St Émilion.

The family of today’s descendants running Ausone goes back to 1690 when Pierre Chatonnet (1636-1728) was officially confirmed owner of the estate.

The 7 hectares (17 acres) of Château Ausone are located on Saint Emilion’s limestone plateau, just a few meters from the medieval village.

The soils are clay-limestone. The grape varieties are Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with a majority of Cabernet Franc at 55%.
