The 2005 Clos l’Eglise gives the brilliant 2001, 2000, and1998 a run for their money. Time will tell if it eventually eclipses those three sensational efforts. A huge, sweet nose of creme brulee intermixed with black cherry liqueur, blackberries, tar, caramel, and mocha/coffee soars from the glass of this blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Opulence, superb intensity, abundant quantities of sweet toasty oak, a full-bodied richness, and excellent purity as well as depth suggest it will age effortlessly for over two decades. This is a brilliant Pomerol from proprietor Helene Garcin and her consulting winemaker, Dr. Alain Raynaud.

Offers a wonderful nose of crushed berry, blackberry and dark chocolate. Jumps out of the glass. Full-bodied, with seamless, velvety tannins and fabulous flavors of vanilla, berry, chocolate and cappuccino, followed by a long, caressing finish. Hard to say if this will be better than the 2000, but equally outstanding. Best after 2012

Chateau Clos L'Eglise Winery Image
This is the land that gives personality to a vintage and it was the work of Sylviane Garcin-Cathiards, she brings the wine to their full potential. After taking over the property in January 1997, with her experience at Chateau Haut-Bergey in Pessac-Léognan, she redesigned the winery. The soil is clay and gravel with lifts dirt iron, which gives the wine a special character, that is often found in Pomerol. Located on the hillside, most of the vineyard extends southwest of buildings, breaking the famous Pomerol plateau. Its area is 6 hectares. It is composed of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc.
