The 2014 Château Croix-Mouton depicts Bordeaux Supérieur as well as any wine can. This wine exhibits black fruit and a hint of savory spices. The wine's bright red currants are both fresh and lively in the aftertaste. Pair it with a seared ribeye. (Tasted: October 11, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

Chateau Croix Mouton Winery Image
Previously known as Chateau Mouton, Croix Mouton has a long history in the Bordeaux region. The property was written about in the 1881 Ferret edition, next to many well-known Bordeaux wine producers of the time. However, the estate has a much longer history dating back to the ancient Romans who planted vines on the property. The Gallo-Romains remains found in its soil are proof of an ancient Bordeaux wine producing past.

In most of France, wines are named by their place of origin and not by the type of grape (with the exception of Alsace). Just like a red Burgundy is by law, always made of Pinot noir, a red Bordeaux is a blended wine composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Depending on the laws of the village from which the grapes come, the conditions of the vintage and decisions of the winemaker, the blend can be further supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and in rare cases, Carmenere. So popular and repeated has this mix of grape varieties become worldwide, that the term, Bordeaux Blend, refers to a wine blended in this style, regardless of origin.
