Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Hominis Fides is our most profound wine, the most complex with the most unpredictable future. The character of the sand if of high definition, which always give a lot of finesse. More concentrated but less charming than 2007 for instance, it will be interesting to compare the two vintages later, in a few years. We cherish the vines of Hominis Fides. Just like an old person, they give back what they are being given. 90% of the quality comes from this every day work.

This wine contains notes of raspberry, ancient roses, almond, violet.

Very intense, showing terrific cut thanks to racy, thoroughly embedded acidity that drives through the massive core of roasted plum, fig, black currant and sage flavors. The finish lets mesquite and black tea notes weave in, without losing any drive. Seriously packed for the cellar. Best from 2012 through 2023. 200 cases made.

The 2009 Gigondas Hominis Fides 100% Grenache from sandy and limestone soils aged 12 months in small barrels (30% new, 40% one-year-old and 30% two to three-years old) possesses slightly sweeter tannin but is not as massive or concentrated as the traditional cuvee. Rich and medium to full-bodied, with lots of minerality, red and black fruit, crushed rock and floral notes, this wine should be drinkable upon release, and evolve for a decade or more.
    Range:90-93

Chateau de Saint Cosme is the leading estate of Gigondas and produces the appellation’s benchmark wines. Wine has been produced on the site of Saint Cosme since Roman times, evident by the ancient Gallo-Roman vats carved into the limestone below the chateau. The property has been in the hands of Louis Barruol’s family since 1570. Henri and Claude Barruol took over in 1957 and gradually moved Saint Cosme away from the bulk wine business. Henri was one of the first in the region to work organically beginning in the 1970s. Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1992, making a dramatic shift to quality, adding a négociant arm to the business in 1997, and converting to biodynamics in 2010.
