Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Lovely bright hue. Clean on the nose, with considerable aromatic intensity for a second-label wine. Initially, lively fresh fruit flavors dominate, followed by the cherry and smoky notes typical of Graves wines from Pessac. On the palate, one is struck at first by the wine’s full-bodied balance and then, quite quickly, the firm tannins coat the mouth agreeably.

A beautiful, soft, richly fruity wine with silky tannins, loads of blue fruits, and hints of smoky barbecue and graphite, the 2000 La Chapelle de La Mission is fleshy, evolved, and complex, a top-notch success that gets a slight upgrade from my original review. Drink it over the next 5-10 years.

Tight and solid, with tobacco, berry, chocolate and vanilla throughout. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a delicious finish. Best after 2008.

In 1664, Madame de Lestonnac bequeathed the domaine of La Mission Haut-Brion to the Peres Lazaristes, a congregation founded by Saint Vincent de Paul. The "good fathers" worked to restore their property to its rightful worth. After them, the Chiapella family (owners in the 19th century) and Woltner family (owners between 1919 and 1983) never stopped improving the vineyard and modernizing the cellars. Since 1983, the Dillon family, already owner of Chateau Haut-Brion, continues the same policy under the presidency of H.R.H. Prince Robert of Luxembourg.
