This is very dense and lively with stones, limestone and cement. Full-bodied, yet vivid and lively. Beautiful finish. This is always an under-the-radar Bordeaux and needs your attention.

The Les Charmes-Godard 2016 Blanc is a blend of 50% Sémillon and 50% Sauvignon Blanc matured 15% new oak. It has a light and slightly waxy bouquet with apple blossom and honeysuckle scents developing, though I would have liked more vigor here. The palate is well balanced with a fresh pear and white peach entry, a fine bead of acidity and a lovely saline tang on the finish. Though not a great vintage for dry white Bordeaux, Nicolas Thienpont and his team have definitely made one of the better examples here.

In 1988, Nicolas Thienpont and his brothers bought Les Charmes Godard, a property of 16 acres, which produces both red and white wine and, starting in 2005, a dessert wine called "Aurea".

In the Charmes Godard white, it is both the predominance of Semillon and the winemaking techniques (barrel fermentation and lies contact) that give the wine its richness and unctuousness, as well as good supporting acidity. Its aromatic complexity is due to judicious blending with Muscadelle and Sauvignon Gris.

Sometimes light and crisp, other times rich and creamy, Bordeaux White Blends typically consist of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Often, a small amount of Muscadelle or Sauvignon Gris is included for added intrigue. Popularized in Bordeaux, the blend is often mimicked throughout the New World. Somm Secret—Sauternes and Barsac are usually reserved for dessert, but they can be served before, during or after a meal. Try these sweet wines as an aperitif with jamón ibérico, oysters with a spicy mignonette or during dinner alongside hearty Alsatian sausage.
