Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Very beautiful pale golden color, clear and bright. The nose is very expressive and evokes citrus (grapefruit), white fruits (pear) and exotic (lychee and pineapple) with floral notes of boxwood, juniper, and laurel. Well balanced with a pleasant liveliness which extends long in a very tasty finish.

Plenty of lime and mineral character with hints of sliced apples. Full body, tangy finish. Drink now. One of the best whites from here in a long time.

For many years, I have enjoyed the pure simplicity of Entre-Deux-Mers. This fresh and racy white wine has long served as one of my top choices with raw oysters. The 2014 Château Marjosse is a top-notch effort. Lively and bright, this wine exhibits green apple, dried herbs, and mineral in its aromas and flavors. Its perky finish makes it a beautiful choice with simply prepared shellfish. I think it is time to stick a bottle of this wine in the fridge and pay a visit to my fish monger. (Tasted: July 6, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

Sometimes light and crisp, other times rich and creamy, Bordeaux White Blends typically consist of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Often, a small amount of Muscadelle or Sauvignon Gris is included for added intrigue. Popularized in Bordeaux, the blend is often mimicked throughout the New World. Somm Secret—Sauternes and Barsac are usually reserved for dessert, but they can be served before, during or after a meal. Try these sweet wines as an aperitif with jamón ibérico, oysters with a spicy mignonette or during dinner alongside hearty Alsatian sausage.

Extending over verdant slopes between the Rivers Dordogne and Garonne, the Entre-Deux-Mers region (“between two seas”) offers great value and a splendid introduction to the dry reds and whites of Bordeaux. Merlot and Cabernet comprise most of the reds; Sauvignon blanc and Semillon are responsible for the whites, all of which are best enjoyed in their youth.
